84 Fuel Pump Question.
I have a ported intake that I am going to install. I was going to upgrade the fuel pump to the 85, but everyone said that I should only change it if I have problems with the existing pump.
In the last week or so, my engine which has always run great, started to really struggle above 3k RPMs and will only go a little over 4k RPM -but feels like it is dragging an anchor and stumbles, coughs ect.
It starts great, accelerates great under 3k rpms and idles great.
What are the symptoms of a weak fuel pump?
I thought that this may be the problem and/or the fuel filter?
On the ingnition side, I replaced the cap, rotor (Accel), wires and plugs about 2k miles ago.
Thanks

Also, if your car has the original 25 year old fuel pump, you had best change it out. They usually start to fail anywhere from 80,000 miles onward. If it fails on you, it will leave you stranded. You can get a new high performance Walbro fuel pump for around $65 if you shop around. Here is a good write-up on how to change it out yourself. The entire job can be done in about an hour.
What is the best way to tell when they are clogged? If it is clogged, who makes the recommended replacement?
In New York State my car is emmisions exempt -should I just kock out the fill for now?
I agree about the fuel pump, as far as I know it is the original.
Thanks, Glen
