My '89 convertible has an oil pressure problem. The car shut down and I couldn't hear the fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump, but still no fuel. I replaced the oil pressure switch and the fuel pump activated and the car started. I drove about 10 miles and the low oil pressure light came on. I replaced oil pump with high volume oil pump and after a few miles the low oil light came on again.
I am baffled, what do these symptoms mean? The digital display on the radio also starts to go wacky. The time display go haywire and then loses power, then resets to 10:00.
Please help, I'm at a loss to figure this out. It doesn't seem to be a mechanical problem.
When you installed the new pressure unit, did you use Teflon tape on the threads? I had a piece of tape that floated around the pressure unit until it went into the units small hole and blocked the oil from entering the unit. The gauge read zero! I pulled off the unit and found the tape blocking the hole.
I didn't use any tape. The gauge reads 37,38 when its cold but drops until the red low pressure light comes on. The wipers also will just barely come on and don't complete the cycle across the windshield.
Could this be an ECM malfunction?
Before you blow the motor up, install a mechanical oil pressure gauge to verify the actual oil pressure. If it is fine, you can then begin to diagnose what sounds to be an electrical problem.
