I'm putting in a 160 thermostat and Ed Wright Chip this week and figured it's a good time to switch to Mobil 1 vs. regular oil, what weight Mobil 1 do you guys recommend for my 89 with 48,000 miles.. I have absolutely no oil leaks or smoke, all stock...
Paul,
I use Mobil 1 in all my vehicles. 5w30 in the LT1 and 10w30 in the L98, a 350 Suburban, and a 305 Camaro. I've run 10w30 in both small block and big block chevys for many years in Nebraska winters (-10 & -20 temps) with no problems. The biggest reason I use 10w30 Mobil 1 in most of the vehicles is because it is easier to find around here. Use whichever one you are comfortable with.
:yesnod: BTW, that is one sweeeettt looking '89 you've got there! :yesnod:
Thats what's in my car right now. It was an Arizona car so it never got below 60degrees outside. I'll be switching to 10-w30 when I do the next oil change.
I buy whatever I'm fortunate enough for the parts store to actually have in stock, which is usally 10w30. In my beater that leaks all over the place, I use 10w40 Dino or thicker. I've never found any reliability issues due to different oil weights. I run 10w40 all winter long in my beater, and change it RARELY. 163k very, very hard miles (I pound the snot out of it daily) and it's running like new.
I run 5W-30 or 10W-30 for road racing. The 15W-50 mix is needed for air cooled or turbocharged cars and such. Thicker viscosity will reduce rear wheel horsepower...not exactly what you want for racing.
