94 LT1 transmission "clunk" in drive.
Hello all.
I did a search and cannot find the exact symptoms I am having. Sorry if I missed a post.
First, some info:
-1994 LT1 coupe with automatic trans.
-52,622 original miles
-stock, owned since 1995
Anyway, my car did something strange yesterday. I am sitting at a light, in drive, foot on brake (duh) after taking a nice hour or so cruise. No issues (or noises) to this point. All of a sudden a "clunk" type sound occurs...kinda' like if you had just shifted from P or N to drive. RPM seemed to drop too. Put in N, OK.
Hmmm...
Light changes, put in D, take off. Car shifts flawlessly. Next light, same thing, maybe 2 "clunks"...uh-oh
BTW, Ambient temp. about 93 degrees...typical Florida. All temps OK, car running/shifting/idles fine otherwise.
Get home, check trans, fluid...about perfect, no smell, just below full/hot. Go through the gears slowly (P,N,D 3,2,1, etc.), seems fine.
Anybody have any thoughts on this...TIA.

If RPMs came back to normal in short order, I would reckon that your clunk may have set off the knock sensors and timing was retarded.
The clunk sounds like a U-joint but that would only be the case if you heard/felt it when moving.
Is there any test drive in a parking lot, for example, that you can do to make the clunk happen at will?
Just a thought, you may want to get your eyes on the motor mounts.

Thanks for the reply.
Basically, what happens (happened) is I am just sitting at a light, in drive, foot on brake....everything's fine for a few seconds...then "clunk". Sounds like trans. to me but I am no expert. Very weird.
This just started happening the other day. The car has been flawless. I will check it out more this weekend, but it never did this before.
