Two weeks ago, I broke the door key for my 87 Coupe. I was able to fish out the broken piece. Somehow, I have managed to loose the broken piece of key that was in the lock. I dont have a spare key.
My local Chevy dealer tells me that Key codes by Vin are no longer available on vehicles older than 1990. I went to a large well respected locksmith in this area.
I asked if he could make a key for the door lock. He said there was no way to figure out the lock cylinder on a GM car.
Back to my dealer, the parts guy is very helpful. He made some phone calls and was again told no key codes older than 1990 is available. One person at GM he talked with told him that some Corvette Museum was given all the key codes prior to 1990. He did not know who/where that museum is located.
I am trying not to take the door apart to remove and replace the cylinders on two doors.
Does anyone have any leads on how/where I can get a key code for a 1987 door. And, is it really true a good locksmith cant figure out the cylinder and simply make a key to work in the door ?
Go to a different locksmith, I called one and he not only opened my door in a frightening fast time, but made a key for my old 89.
Course this was 6 yrs ago, but the key is the same and I know they still use the same unlock tool.
If you still have the original lock cylinder for your console a good locksmith can figure out the door key. There is only one extra pin in the door and 5 different possibilities. My 85 didnt have a door key but he did it in about 30 mins and 3 tries.

Ok, Something aint clicking here. locksmiths can make a key by feel.. Pull the door cylinder out and take it to a good smith and he can make it. I have a 1969 javelin that needed door/trunk keys, Now thats 40+ years old and AMC to boot.. it took him about 5 minutes with the cylinder to make me keys. American Motors Baby.
If worse comes to worse.. and you are covered up in non compliant locksmiths.. order new door cylinders. they are pretty cheap and they come with keys.
Don't need to find an "old time" locksmith. A competent one will be able to do the job just fine.
Competent is the Key Word. The last old locksmith died a few years ago. He was competent. Now, there are a bunch of guys that call them selves locksmiths, most dont even have a shop, just a truck to mke calls with. I live very remote in the Mts, I will find a competent on in Albany.
