after driving my 89 (stock car except for fuel injectors), when i cut it off...you turn the switch to on...the dash lights up but when you go on over to start with the ignition switch it doesn't do anything. it acts like you are trying to crank it with the car still in "drive". when the thing cools back down...it cranks fine. just when i thought i had all the bugs out of it, i get a new issue...any thoughts from anybody...maybe VATS is acting up...or a ground? i don't know...
You might get away with replacing only the solenoid. Heck, cleaning the contacts inside the solenoid might do the trick. The very best solution, however, is a mini high torque starter.
Very true Muffin. Dont take this wrong 19vette89. That is would be eaiser for some one who does not have the experience it would be better to just replace the starter. Also if you have to pay someone to r&r the starter IMO it is better to add on another 50 bucks or so and have a complete rebuilt unit. But good point esp on the high torque starters.
I had the very same thing happen just this week to my 89. It was my starter. I thought at first it might have been the park/neutral switch because I have the vats bypassed, but on test, it was the starter. (About the only dang thing I haven't replaced on this car!) I put a new one it yesterday and the problem is gone.
