i have the assembly apart (drivers side) on a 85 because the light would not turn up. when i have the wire clip off the adjuster the motor turns fine, but when there is pressure on the **** it starts to short, the motor turns even when the headlight switch is off. any ideas, what are the parts needed to rebuild the motor?
If I understand correctly the motor shuts off because of torque created when the light bucket comes closed or open all the way. The mechanism that does this is at the bottom where the manual **** comes thru. The spring there actuates contactors that turn the motor off. I dont have the knowledge to explain it further but if these contactors are worn or dirty, the motor wont work.
Ive had the same problem try this...?
On the left headlight connect the positive wire to the green wire from the motor and to open, connect the negative to the white wire. These are the wire colors on my 84 and I am assuming they are the same on yours . If the headlight opens, you have one or more defective headlight relays. Good Luck.
thanks for the reply, yes the wires are the same, when i tried what you said it made a squeaking noise, and when the clip was off the **** moved slightly. any more ideas?
Thanks Pat
You may not need a new motor. Try taking it apart and cleaning the limit switch contacts at each end of the motor, and with a good clean-up and lube with white grease (Lubriplate or equiv.) you'll probably be good. I had the same problem with my '84 before my clean-up job. They've been working good for a couple of years since I cleaned mine.
