I'm changing out my shift cable and I'm wondering what this switch is. The reason I'm asking is I'm looking for a switch that tells the computer when the car is put in gear so the rpm can be adjusted. I'm wondering if this may be it. The wiring from it appears to go back to a switch that is in sink with the shifter position.
Not having worked on this particular model year and not having done any searches in the shop manual - off the top, I'd be thinking reverse lights?, starting circuit. Try unplugging it and see what happens.

On all the cars I have seen the P/N switch for computer is part of the switch located at shifter base that also has backup light and neutral start switches.
Should be 6 wire connector; 3 x 2 pairs of wires. One pair for each circuit

The switch on the base of the shifter is combination neutral/backup and also supplies input to the PCM to determine gear selection. The device in your picture is either the arming sensor for the air bag or the lateral accelerometer for the ABS.

Ok Jim you know my electrical ability is non existent. How can I check this thing or should I just get a new one? Also I notice there are slots where the bolts go, obviously for adjustment. Is it possible it may have just been out of adjustment?

Orange and black wires shown at switch.
Orange comes from computer ; blk goes to ground

Note position of wires at switch; with connector removed put a DVM across the switch terminals and see if you get a circuit when shifter is in required position

I opened this thing up and it's just a bunch of contacts. A little piece of copper wire strand was in there too just floating around. I cleaned it up with some electronics spay and put it back together. Maybe this helped. Thanks Guys!
