To replace it you are going to have to vacuum the system. So unless you have the right equipment you might as well go to a shop.
I/we do have the equipment. My leak is at the schrader valve. I need to know the size so I can replace it and put a vacuum on the system, then test for leaks.
I don't want to go buy 6 valves hoping to find the right size.
^^That is a good question. I assumed they were all the same size. If you are opening the system anyway....just go to the parts store and perform the swap right there.....pull the old one out and take it in, size it up....
I did this just the other week when Mine was leaking as well.
Why don't you tell it like it is and say something like....."I think you are too stupid/inept/ill equipped to fix it properly"
Sorry mang, "take it the shop" is this months soap box for me.
Nice soap box, but you don’t have to worry about me. Taking my Vette to the shop…well; that’s the last thing I’ll do. I like working on my Vette and the other vehicles in my possession.
Just like AA is for quitters, “take it to the shop” that’s the easy way out and that’s not me, I like my $$$ too much to throw it away at a shop when I know I can fix it myself and know the works been performed correctly the first time.
I found the valve at Carquest auto parts Its a small valve, I'll post the # when I get home.
My system still had positive pressure in it when we replaced the valve. We then put a vacuum on the system, it held and the last step was to recharge the system with 29 ounces of 134A and 3 ounces of super sealer. The system is blowing ice cold and it feels great!
No leaks and I'm happy. The valve at the parts store....$2.55
A trip to the stealership?...a big pain in the *** and lots of $$$ out of my pocket...and who knows what else those f-ing dirt bags would try to rip me off for
Two years and the systems is still filled and blowing cold!
-and I didn't take it to the shop!
Good job!
I just did mine this spring...I was changing it over to 134a and when I pulled the expansion valve I found debris in it. Changed out the condenser, the accumulator AND the hoses (while I had it apart...they will start to leak eventually), took it to a friends shop and they put their machine on it and it's blowing cold.
Something very much needed in Texas in the summer
P.S. You forgot to post the part # for the Schrader valve...
Also, was there a special tool to remove the valve?
Or will a standard valve stem remover do it.
Maybe, maybe not depends on the valve. They sell A/C valve core tools they are very cheap, I have one. Typically, one side is tire valve core size other is thicker and has a bigger slot.
Yes, A/C system sealer....don't get me started on that stuff....
Lets just say I'm glad its not in my car. But...hey, if it works for you, more power to ya.
That ranks right up there with Bar's Stop Leak and Mechanic in a Bottle. Why store your small engines properly and avoid problems when you can spend $$$ on a bottle of fluid?
