Default FYI 84 Air pump removal

So as many of you that have the 84's we find that we can delete the air pump easily just by buying a shorter belt after its removed.

However, myself and a few others have one thing in common: the belt tends to stretch due to the lengh of run from the tensioner to the alternator.

Today I finally got sick of that problem and heres what i came up with. Total cost of material is $52.00 and 1 hour labor
Using the bracket that was for the Air pump itself.
Center hole tap out to 1/2 inch x 13 thread

Get these parts
Idler pulley

Door striker bolt kit

The pulley has a built in bearing, the striker kit uses a plastic bushing that will need to be pressed into the pulley. Very simple using some emery cloth and then some grease just press in with a bench vise.

At your local hardware store you can get a nice metal spacer that the bolt will fit into and a self locking 1/2 x 13 nut.

Cut the spacer to the length you want. The nut I'm using just as a lock just in case the bolt loosens up.
should look like this

End Result

And running

Good info. Then do you use the stock belt or smaller?

Thought I put that in there.
84 inch belt or a 84.5 would work

I removed my air pump and used an 85" belt. Adding the idler would require a longer belt. Are you running undersized pulleys?

No undersize pulleys. All stock size.
How close is your tensioner pulley to your waterpump pulley?

looks as close as yours, about an inch. I've had it like this for years with no trouble but it seems adding the idler would require a longer belt.

This is a great thread for us 84 guys....This should be a sticky? Anyways, quick question? I'm going to be deleting my air pump but, I also want to remove my catalytic converter? I was thinking of unbolting my cat, cutting the center out and welding in pipe between the 2 flanges? Anyone do something like this??
