Finally got my climate control functioning... blower works, levels change etc. checked the freon level it was low.
Purchased a recharge kit and start to fill it. The compressor will run for about 10 seconds then turn off, then start again.
Watching the recharge gauge, the compressor runs while the pressure is over 25 but the pressure only stays above 25 for a very short time. while the compressor is off the pressure rises to around 40 then the compressor comes on, the pressure drops, then the compressor stops.
if I jumper the compressor to stay on the level never rises above 25. I've uses 2 of the smaller cans with stop leak in them and no change.
what could be causing this?
when the compressor isn't on what should the pressure be?
What flavor freon are you using? A 86 came with r12 and unless it was retrofitted I don't know what you could be using.
Anyway, it still isn't full, which is why it is cycling.
The pressure will go up as the high and low side equalize. I don't know what the pressure should be for 134. The pressure will go up and down as the compressor cycles. If is is putting out cold air I wouldn't put much more in.
R134 at 90 degrees has a saturation pressure of 82 psi. Assuming no engine heat or contamination, that's where both sides should be with everything off. Once running, the high should rise to about 230 at which point the Main Fan should come on and stay on until it drops to 190 psi. If you're seeing equalized pressures in the 200's after it's sat, I'd guess air and water or the stop leak product has seriously mucked it up. Anyway, if it's starting with those numbers, it may be tripping the high pressure limit. You need a decent set of gages to check it out.
