Default Problems

My 92 vette is not running right. The speedometer does not work, the check engine light is on, and the rev limiter acts like it kicks on a 3,000 RPM. This all started happening at the same time so I think they are related. I have taken it to two shops that do not want to work on it because the computer is not communicating with their diagnostic equipment. The car has an aftermarket security system and different cams in the engine. I also just had the battery and starter replaced. Anyone have ideas of what is wrong?

See this link to pull the codes yourself using only a paper clip:

http://www.corvettebuyers.com/c4vettes/ecm.htm

For best results troubleshooting follow the flow charts in the correct factory service manual for your car, the codes do NOT indicate a part is bad, only that there is a problem in that electrical circuit. Many issues are due to poor electrical connections and do not require part replacement, good luck.

I am familiar with the paper clip method and I have already tried it and this method did not work to retrieve the codes.

Sounds like a ECM problem based on limited info.

Good luck trying to find a computer though. You will probably need to send yours out for repair.

There is a diagnostic procedure in the FSM to diagnose a car that will not flash codes. As others have mentioned you may need an ECM but following the procedure will help isolate the problem. ECM's for 92 and 93 cars are scarce, here is a link to a company that can rebuild yours.
