I know first hand on a 2 stoke dirt bike when the crank starts to go it sound like there a guy in there with a big hammer beating away before it stops running then you end up push your 200 lb+ dirt back back though the sand rock hils and everyting else you rode though before it quit on you.
Ask me how I know this.
If you know it sounding bad don't drive it, this a timebomb waiting to happen if you do drive it bring you'r fully charged cell phone you just mite need it.
Oh ya my luck every time something go's bad like that your by your self somewere bad and knowones around to help you out and all you'r freinds see you'r name on there caller iD but they don't feel like picking the hone up Ha Ha Just kiding on the caller ID ther just of the house at the time or your or there cell phone has no signal.

A lifter will usay not be a knock but a clanking noise for lack of better terms and noticable right under the valve covers. If you have a rod or crank noise you can usaly locate the cyl by taking the spark away that way it is taking the load off that cyl. you can always use a sephoscope (spelled wrong) to help locate. Spun rods are way more common then mains.
