Default Balancer clearance?

I was wondering how much clearance is need with a harmonic balancer and the frame? I just put my 383 in and it appears to have about 3/16 of an inch at the closest point

The balancer that is called for with the C4 to clear the brace it 6 1/2. I measured my balancer and it is between 6 1/2 and 6 3/4 but still has room. If you have a larger balancer then that you could have problems when the motor torques..3/16 is not much room...WW

When I checked header clearance it looked like the engine moved 1/8" toward the passenger side. If it does hit because of that, use hard engine mounts?

What are you measuring? It can't be the distance between the balancer and the front brace, because a crank pulley has to go on AFTER the balancer. 3/16" isn't enough for that!

Are you talking about the distance over to the side? What size (diameter) balancer did you use? 8"?

Nobody has really answered my question... I am aware of the solutions to the problem, I just want to know how much clearance I need to give it.

That is because there is no correct answer.
Only opinions.
I have never seen a balancer to frame spec in any document.
If you are asking opinions, I say 1/2 inch.

Yeah I followed the SkiDwnIt method and made some clearance to fit a larger balancer. I was broke then, regret doing it now. I should've just saved a bit more a bought a 6 3/4" balancer, save myself the work and it weighs less than the 8".

I don't remember if I spec'd the distance or not, but I know when I put the motor in. It was ok.
