so i noticed something prety shady when i was attempting to change my water pump the other day. how detrimental to the car is having your heater core completely bypassed?
Won't hurt the car, but will make a sizeable dent in your wallet.
only if i need heat right? while on base i have 2 vehicles, my 86 vette and my grandpas 98 f150. the lowest ive seen it out here is like 58 (which i thought was freezing as i had just come off a 2 year stint in okinawa) but like you said, it wont hurt the car, but then again i thought the heater core was essential to the cooling process? been a while since i messed around with automotive, so im trying to re-familiarize myself
As long as you don't need heat everything will be fine. Dealers charge about $1,000 to change out a heater core, seems GM built the whole car around the heater.
You need to do some testing but I would assume the heater core is leaking. I just installed a new heater core ($38.95) in my 95. Not an expensive project, just takes a lot of time and patience, You will need to disassemble you passenger side dash after removing the passenger seat. You really need an FSM. On the 95 you remove the lower dash panel and the top panel to get to all the screws that hold the heater core enclosure. I had an 86 but never pulled the core. I would suspect that there is different from my 95. It's just a PITA job. PM me hand I will put you in touch with the heater core source.
