If it's an 86 with the original automatic trans, it will jerk into gear at that speed. the 500 is a good number if the idle air control valve is good.
To test the idle air control valve, start the car, let it idle. wait til it lowers the idle to 500 after the self tests are over.
now turn on the air conditioning.......500 RPM's........turn off the air conditioning........500 RPM's.
Turn on the air conditioning.......500 RPM's.....put the car in gear.............500RPM's.
all is good.
If you get 500 RPM's and turn on the air conditioner and the engine dies, the idle air control valve is not working. If you put the car in drive and the engine lopes or dies, it's the IAC again.
If I wanted to change the idle speed for some reason, I would get the guy who programmed my chip to do that. By cheating and forcing it into the speed you want, all you are doing is eliminating the IAC altogether. Fine if you don't have varying conditions.
Why do you want a higher idle? All that does is slam the gear harder.
