thanks, that was very helpful. I saved this info for future reference. here's what i'm trying to do. i just bought a car that has been highly modified for more power (no EGR, no PCV). i need to have it pass emissions but the check engine light is on because of the missing equipment so it won't pass visual inspection (think it will pass the smell test). i just want to disable the light until it passes inspection. it also has a second computer running to do diagnostics on the engine so not concerned about there being a problem i'm not aware of.
thanks again.
The only option you have....as far as I know is to have your computer reprogrammed. I would recommend PCMFORLESS. Enter that into a web search engine. E-mail Bryan your information and he will assist with your needs. It's not expensive.
As far as emissions.....if the lights on you failed until you have it turned off. Some emission stations will read your computer and tell you that you have to have a certain amount of miles driven on the car to make sure the code issue is fixed. The OBD II system states a lot....you won't fool them. As far as removing the bulb....I wouldn't do it...it will place your car in a open circuit and it will not run correct and another car I witnessed in the pass went into a limp mode. Once emissions plugs into your OBD II they'll fail you.
My guess is that you are going to fail the emissons test since your engine doesn't have a EGR or PCV components, although you may be able to pass with a great tune on the computer.I advise you to check & see if its related to anything thats missing or another issue that needs to be addressed.I wouldn't start pulling bulbs until I knew what the code was, tried fixing it,& then talked to a quality tuner & asked what he/she thinks about passing this test.I'm so glad there is not emisson testing here anymore.Every taxi cab in Minneapolis would fail along with a quarter of the cars on the road
