Getting Started with ALDL/OBD1 Cable...Help
My Corvette is a 1987
I have order the book; "Corvette Fuel Injection and Electronic Engine Control. My ALDL OBD1 Cable arrived today. I have down loaded Tunner Pro RT and have it installed on my Laptop. The OBD1 Cable came with a Cd with 'Free Scan'. Thinking this was going to be easy, I head to the shop. MY ALDL OBD1 Cable is jumped for the 10K ohm resistor between A&B as instructed in the instructions. Power plug for the Serial cable is plugged in my cigarette lighter and I did verify power on a digital voltmeter. I must run the serial cable as my Thinkpad does not have USB ports.
Test 1. With computer executing Free Scan, set to com port 1, key turned to run, dash is lighted, I get nothing. Start engine and still get nothing, dashboard is all at zero.
Test 2. I execute Tuner Pro RT. It now appears I have to down load an additional files like .bin and something else before it will run. Tuner Pro RT was also dead in the water. What additional files do I need to down load from Tuner Pro RT, and where do I put them on my computer.
I know my Computer and serial port are running normal as I use that with my GPS. I also tested the GPS on the serial port (com 1) and it works fine.
Will someone please kick me in the rear and jump start me ? I want to be able to read codes and engine parameters so I can follow in the book I bought and learn this fuel injection and electronic engine control. For the time being, I have no desire to tamper or change the contents of the GM Eprom. Thats much later when I learn what I am doing.
Many Thanks

With my setup I plug my laptop into the APU1 via a usb port. The ALDL cable goes from the APU1 to the car ALCL socket under the drivers side dash.
I cannot follow what you are doing exactly. Where are you plugging the ALDL cable into? What relevance does a serial comms cable have to a 12 supply from your cigarette lighter?
I know there are always many ways to skin a cat. Interested to see how you are doing it. I have some bin files, ads files and xdf files that you need with tunerpro rt. However you may find they are already there.

Maybe only pins A and B are used for the datalogging!
Here is some advice from Mark Mansur to get Tunerpro rt working for datalogging for an 87:
"Load up the proper definition for your vehicle (mask 32, in your case - I think you can get away using either 1227165_6E.ads or 1227165_160baud.ads - start with the 6E one)."

Position 1. Normal
Position 2. A shorted to B
Position 3. 10K resistor between A & B
I am going to loose the rest of my hair on this one LOL

Pin B shorted to ground (A) only puts ECM in diagnostic mode

Yours gets power from USB connection; his serial port setup gets it from cig lighter

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
The cable I have has an ethernet type termination connection on it that plugs into the APU1! There must be a USB to RS232 serial conversion occurring inside the APU1.

).
The ALDL data connection is output only; allows you to see what is happening in engine.
The stock memcal is not reprogrammable without taking it out of the ECM so you can't upload data onto it; unlike the '94+ LT1 PCM which has inbuilt flash memory and can be tuned directly ( with correct software and cable )
