Went for a ride yesterday morning and got on it pretty hard going straight on a smooth road and heard a series of bangs. My first thought was oh no not rod bearings... I have good oil pressure before and after and no engine noises for the rest of the ride home and did some mild acell decell stuff with nothing unusual at all.. I am thinking C beam or u-joints, am I missing something here? I did a search for u-joint and got a bunch of results but none really useful. I did not dare try one for 'noise'..LOL
Dave
How often do you get on it? I've seen cars get floored for the first time in months or years and they cough up a cloud of soot and pop a bit. Its not usually very loud popping though..
Gonna need to describe the noise a little better...area it came from, mechanical noise? possible exhaust noise?

It sees plenty of running I don't speed but waste little time getting there. 4 to 5000 rpm is pretty common often for a few seconds now and then so it is not from lack of use or a poor tuneup etc. It is a mechanical. a series of 3 bangs I did not stay on it to try and figure out where it was coming from as it sounded serious and did not want to call a wrecker had GF with me and that would not have played well. I question the u-joints or cbeam as I have heard an occasional creek thatwas somewhere in the drivetran on acceleration. the car has 70k and little has been done other than oil changes etc. so everything original other than my work. Good tuneup altenator battery radion exhaust new betl that sort of thing. I have rear suspension and u-joints on the list along with sway bars. I was hoping to not do them so soon as the weather is really nice and my business very busy so little free time to wrench would rather drive until things slow down.
Was it just noises or did you feel anything out of the ordinary?
Had GF with me we were talking the radio was on so there was so much going on the minute I heard noises I lifted right away as it was the first instinct. Today I am going to put it up on stands and look for anything loose or can hit another piece of metal. I am also going to pull the oil filter and cut it open to see if there is any metal in it before getting on it again. I drove it for about 10 miles after it happened and no noises at all but it was between 25 and 45 with cars all around me so very easy on it with no road to play with. I was planning on doing rear suspension and u-joints so maybe the time for that is now just to eliminate all of that. Of course checking oil filter first because if it is loaded with metal the answer might get real obvious. And unfortunately the end of my summer driving if it is the engine.
Took the car out for a ride this morning and could not duplicate the noise the got thinking, a dangerous thing LOL, but think GF had the passenger side window part way down and I know it rattles sometimes on a very bumpy road if not all the way up or all the way down. I also detected the slightest of sounds that did sound like spark knock ping possibly or some suspension part heat sheild maybe touching something. The engine ran perfectly so no real worries there. It is due for an oil change and will have them take a quick look for that sort of stuff. Any suggestions at what to look at appeciated. I was thinking anything tin heatshields covers tubes etc and check u-joints for being loose and Cbeam torqued correctly..
It is supposed to be a nice day I am going for a cruise and just take it easy on the noise pedal for today. If something is loose it will get looser

Maybe you were thinking too much about it and it was pinging? my '86 does that from time to time depending on how old gas is. If you're not really paying attention I suppose you could confuse it as something being wrong.
