This is what the book tells you. You can buy a special tool, "Chinese Fingers" I think its called to help install a new seal. Honestly, I had an absolute bitch of a time. Resorted to loosening all the mains and dropping the crank to give me enough clearance to get the upper half of seal in and out. Good luck.
Muffin try not to use chiness fingers on these seal. They worked ok with the old rope seals that hand no form to them. These seals are formed and have lips that can be torn. One of the best things GM did was go to the one peice seal. You are right they are a bit#h to install. What I do is drop the rear main take a brass drift punch and tap the upper seal around till I can pull it out. I take lithum grease and coat the seal and the block area the best I can, Take care in making sure the seal is in the right direction I press it anginst the crank and rotate it into place If you are carefull once you get it most of the way in you can take your punch and tap it home. I just saw what Paul posted and that helps a lot also. When I say tap do not tap the lip area. And avoid it when installing if you can
