I just purchased an Auto Meter Autogage 2302 tach. I am going to do the install this weekend. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on the locations and colors of wires on the car, to be tapped into ?
I have heard many who install the pickup wire by tapping in to the wiring harness inside the dash. Most of us that drag race simply run a new wire to the distributor. I am contemplating on installing a large tach in my son's 86. Please post pics of where and how you installed it on to the cramped dash area. Are you going to incorporate the use of a shift light?
I've got that tach, I love it. Very big improvement over the stock. My stock tach was way off, I always thought I was giving it hell but I was actually driving like a little old lady. My stock tach pegs out at about 3800 actual rpms. I spliced and ran a wire from the tach connector on the dist trough the rubber boot in the door jam into the dash and up to my tach. I also spliced into the wire for the light in the gear selection lens by the shifter. This allows you to dim the tach light if you want to with the normal dimmer switch on the dash. I also spliced into a switched 12vdc wire under the dash. I think I got the ground from the cigarette lighter. I eventually mounted my tach on top of the dash just to the right of the steering wheel by glueing it down with a little black rtv. It is not in the way of vision. The shift light works great, not too bright. I was able to run the wires out of the upper air vent, so you can only see about one inch of them. This is where I was going to put it originally but I just put it on the dash.
You may want to hook up with JD383. He just installed the same tach in his 90 which I think has the same dash as your 94.
I just installed this tach in my 87 with the old style dash and ended up puting it on the dash beside the A pillar left of the steering wheel. I really did'nt want it there, but there just wasn't anywhere else to put it out of site. I ran a new wire to the distributer and to a ground in the engine bay. I picked up the park light wire under the dash for the inst. light, however this does not give me the ability to dim the tach lighting. I also found a wire under the dash that was switched (powered only when the ignition is tuned on) to power the tach.
I like the tach and the shift light. It's much better than the stock tach that went away after 3000 rpm. My only complaint is that the **** used for setting your shift light point seems to be too loose and allows the setting to wonder from vibration.
I fabricated a thin aluminum plate to match the tach mounting base and painted it black. I then used the mounting screws provided to mount the bracket to the plate. Then I ground down the screws flush with the plate so that the bottom of the fabricated plate was smooth. I Then used a strong thin two sided tape to tape the plate and attached bracket/tach to the dash. Sounds like overkill maybe, but I didn't want any holes in my dash, and two sided tape directly to the bracket and dash just wouldn't hold very long.
I then used basic black wire loom to conceal the exposed wireing.
It actually looks pretty good on the dash. The 3 1/2" face is not as gawdy as the big ones, but does look a bit intimidating.
I also put on some wire connectors so I can disconnect them easily. I bought some solder-up connectors at Radio Shack which were kind of p.i.a. to solder up.
I was doing some work on my computer the other day, I noticed the power connectors coming off the power supply would be nice to use. If I would have thought of that first, I would have stopped by a small computer sales shop and picked up an extension for the power cords that go to the drives, then cut the wires halfway between the ends, and would have had one male, and one female with 4 leads all ready to wire up.
Ezgoin721,
How about posting pictures of your installation?
Thanks,
I 'd like to, but I don't have a digital camera, or the smarts to get pictures posted. If I can get a couple taken I'll see if JD383 will post them for me!
Gladly...Id post a few good ones..but the car isn't here. Jeff, send me what you snap and I'll gladly put them up for you. I'll see if I can find the one's I took when I had it installed.
