Setting the timming on 84
Hes my situation. I just completed a new set of lifters on my 84. Runs as quiet as a mouse and after forgetting to hook up the module she now runs like a kitten. So the final step is setting the timming. So my brother lends me his old timming light. I hook the inductive pick up clamp on #1 cylinder and the red lead on the positive and black on the negitive start her up and nothing. So I call my brother and tell him his light is no good. So I go and buy a cheap one at Sears. Get it home hook it up as directed and bang Nothing. OK I call the tech line. They ask me how I hooked it up and I tell me and say to me take it back and get a new one that one is defected. I go back to sears get a new light and Bang. Nothing. Is this possible that both lights are bad or am I doing something wrong?

You can try setting the timing off of #6 cylinder too. Maybe #1 wire has high resisentce. Make sure the power/ground leads are making good contact, use a test light to confirm. Is seen those little battery bolts get corroded inside.

That happens when you don't make a GOOD connection on the pick-up lead. Sometimes you'll have to resort to using a plastic cable tie to TIGHTLY hold that lead to the plug wire. #1 has to be completely inserted in the lead too, then the lead must be fully closed.
You're just not making a good connection, since you've gone through 3 with the same results. Maybe you need to let someone show you how to do it.
