Default There goes the tranny.

Have cruise control on going to work this morning and the rpms slid up to 4000. thinking right off the bat that's not right. put it in 3rd and still slipping. Put it into 2nd and finally have a gear. Checked the fluid at the nearest gas station. Low, black, metal filliments in it. So after alot of cursing and anger figure I lost 3rd and O/D on the 4L60e in my 96.

So what's the best thing to do. Rebuild, get a new one or swap 6 speed?

My day is f**kin ruined.

SOB!

Hey look at it this way. It's Monday ! Hell of a way to spend 1/7th of your life isn't it ?

Just wait till you get the tranny rebuilt and the shift kit installed. You're gonna need duct tape to stop the corners of your mouth from pointing upward. Use your original trans for the rebuild not a swap. Keep it original. If you're going to do 3 & 4 why not do the others while you're at it. It's already open and no more labor or just very little to do the whole thing. Might want to check out HD clutches also.

Get a good rebuilder check with local vette mechanics or dealers.

Get a warranty both time(months) and Horsepower.

Mine when done 6 years ago had 1 year parts and labor and 600 HP guarantee.

Same happened to me with my 4l60. Had it beefed up with stage 2 shift kit and 2500 hi-stall. Fantastic. The money pain subsides quick with the joy of the seat of the pants gear changes and acceleration.

Except go with a higher stall. 2800rpm or so

I blew a sprag up in my tranny, having it rebuilt (the right way) and adding the stall ended up being 2 of the best things i've ever done to my car.

Sounds good. Where do I get the shift kit and the high stall? Got any good links?

Transgo or B&M for shift kit?

All this over time will pay off at work.

How much does all of this usually run? I know tranny work can be a nightmare on the wallet.

I brought the vette in today. Said R&R would cost up to $1800. Going with stage 1 shift kit, 2400 stall torque convertor, and all upgraded internals.

How many miles on your Vette?

I've read the C4 auto tranny already had a type of shift kit built in.

i was thiking a newer unit like a 4l60e, with all improvements over the years since first introduction in early 80's as th 700r4,it was a reliable and good unit,a lot of 700r4 run great after 25 years of vette guys abuse...i can't belive your relatively fresh unit may fault in 14 years...damn hope you on the road soon

Sorry but are you saying $350 in labour/h @ $45/h?...and all the rest are upgrade parts price...parts aren' cheap but the guy in the shop was a rocket only 8 hours to perform the entire rebuild and re-assemble

If this shop does quality work with a reasonable warranty I doubt you will do any better.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. As I was dealing with my club mechanic the $350 was for him to remove the tranny, deliver it to the transmission specialist, pick it up from the transmission specialist and then reinstall and test.

The $3500 was for parts and labour for the trans specialist to do the rebuild.

Hope this clarifies.

$3500 is more than half the value of the car according to the C4 values that are posted here. Sure would suck to spend that much on a tranny rebuild, then someone wrecks into it not long after. All that money on the tranny rebuild would then be gone.

that's is true in Australia where GM is a national brand and you can find parts everywhere at any GM dealer, think about in Europe where GM and old Corvette are exotic car...btw when you'r moved by passion everything make sense...

Perth is a very remote part of the world. Cars in Perth are more expensive than on the east coast of Australia due to the remoteness. An original condition pre 90 C4 in Perth costs about $20K.

As we have a strong mining economy in Western Australia mechanics command big money. They are the richest people around. The guy with the best vette in our club (z06) has his own bobcat business for instance.

The last time I went to a dealer was for a tranny problem on my Ford SUV. They wanted $5000 just to remove the tranny from the vehicle to work out why the "check trans" light had come on on the dash! Instead I went to the local Chrysler dealer and traded it for a new turbo diesel jeep. Took the jeep for its first warranty service to just change the oil and the dealer charged $400!

So all in all the corvette is very economical compared with these new cars and hopefully hold their value better. A lot of fun and street cred too.
