Default Oil Temp Sensor Replacement - L98 - Any Tips?

Hello, I have tracked my false oil temp readings back to the sensor being bad. I have an 85 L98 and in my research Ive found that the sensor is located above the filter. What Im wondering nos is if anyone has any words of wisdom before I go after this job. Will I lose any oil? Is it a simple procedure? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The oil temp sensor is actually above the pan level, so I don't think much, if any, oil would come out.

Just take out the old one and put the new one in.

It's pretty simple.

Thats what I figured but had to check. Some cars turn simple things to hard projects!

I would check and clean the connection first to see if that makes a difference. Lots of times when the oil filter is changed, that connection gets knocked around. It's also pretty dirty under there at that spot.

Just do it with the engine off or you'll get some!

Thanks for the advice! It really was easy...took about 10 minutes to get the sensor loose. However, finding a new one was a different story. Nobody around me had them or even heard of it. One place told me it would cost $130!!!!! Do I need to order it online?

Heres pictures of the sensor I took out. It was directly above the oil filter and it was sitting on a little ledge sort of area.

Looks like ill be ordering it from there. I was expecting to pay maybe $30. Its insane how expensive a little sensor is.

Ask them for an oil temperature 'switch'.

It's the way they've got it listed, instead of a 'sensor'.

The one listed is for an 87, but it should be the same.

Best to tell them AZ ****'s the part number. Ask 'em if they have PS201 and take it from there.

Call 'em first.

If they don't have it, then can order it from another store.

Saves gas too!

And, look online first at the AZ web site. You have to do the "heavy lifting" for a lot of those guys over there.
