Update on 85's problem: appears the fuel pump took a trip south. The reason the adjustable regulator seemed to make the problem worse was pump wasn't putting out enough pressure to overcome the spring in the regulator. After some more trouble shooting it now looks like rust in the tank may have taken the pump out. Now waiting for a new tank(backordered until end of Oct).Inside of tank was very rusted so hopefully this was root cause of problem. Will update as things progress.
Thanks but couldn't believe how hard it was to find anyone with a new tank. Guess there aren't a lot of problems with them so not a lot of call for replacements. Plenty of used ones out there but don't see the point in swaping one problem for another. Hopefully this new tank will in fact be available at end of month and I get the old girl back on the road.
Picked the car up Friday and there is most definitely a differnece in how the car runs. When the car went into the shop the best fuel pressure at the rail was 26 lbs. got it up to 45psi before bringing back down to approx 34 where it seems to run smoothest. The car starts as soon as the key is turned to start,no more cranking for a few seconds. The response to the throttle is much crisper. Although I haven't had the chance to put a lot of miles on her she is better running shape than any time since I've had her.
