This is driving me nuts....A 1984 Corvette....won't start. At least about 75% of the time. The other 25%, it starts and runs fine. But the times it won't start, its just as though it was in gear...turn the key...nothing. Wait a couple hours...it usually starts. Its an automatic....and I've tried everything the book says, everything I know, and then some. Has anyone ever ran into this kind of starting problem?
Jump the transmission position switch when it won't start and see if it will start, could be defective. Measure battery terminal volts or at least look at the dash voltmeter when you attempt a start when it won't crank. Voltage must not fall below 9.0 volts or the battery is discharged or at the end of its life or you have a poor cable connection. Measure the voltage on the "s" terminal on the starter when it won't crank, it must be 12 volts or your ignition switch is suspect. Jump 12 volts to the s terminal and verify that the starter will crank. If it won't, then you have a defective start solenoid or a poor connection of the large wire on the starter motor.
If it was equipped with the VATS system I will bet that is the problem. Ecklers has a by=pass for 25-30$ that will install in minuites. Only problem is that the VATS system bill now be inoperable. But if you have an alarm it will still work. Just my .02
I know..you've probably heard this a thousand times...but the procedure is..no fuel?..ok...no spark?...ok..In some models i have heard if you do not have enough fuel pressure the system shuts down...completely!!! You could be looking at a fuel pump simply going out..sometimes it fires ...sometimes it doesn't . I just went through the same problem..service guy was demanding i had a faulty ignition all the way to the computer...I said , B.S. went and bought a $56.00 fuel pump, been running ever since.
