Well I made it back home finally and pulled the plugs. Car has been sitting since last week so I got right on it today. Yep, fuel was still in cylinders and came out of some when I pulled plugs. I cranked it after the plugs were out and some gas came out again. It did not crank very long. May need to charge battery.
I installed new injectors and the did not leak. Nor did they spray.
I am going to let her sit a couple of days and dry out the cylinders. Charge the battery and install new plugs.
Bought some new oil and filter also.
I will check the fuses for the injectors and fuel pump and see how it goes.
Feel better now. I was working out of town all week and car had to sit. Now at least I am back home and can get something done.
Let me know if anyone has an ideas or if I am missing something.
By the way. If anyone has to remove plugs themselves in a 84 vette the will need a 3/8 universal socket to get the last one on passenger side near firewall. Last one is always a pain in the a**.
Learning experience for sure.
Oh ya, I only cranked it to make sure it still cranked and to get the gas out. I have everything for the oil change. I have it on level ground now and plan to leave it sit for the next couple of days to dry out.
I am gonna make sure the injectors spray correctly before I change the oil. They did not spray when I tried it so I just disconnected the fuel pump for now. I still need to check fuses.
Then I plan on changing the filter and oil. Charging the battery and putting in fresh plugs.
Cant figure out why injectors dont spray.
Any ideas?
I was not sure if I heard the fuel pump or not. Was to busy looking at other things.
Charge the battery up immediately. Discharged batteries sitting will cause lead sulphate to collect on the plates and then the battery cannot be charged up and will have to be replaced. Always keep your batteries charged up, never let them sit discharged.
Before cranking anymore, spray the cylinder walls with WD40 or better yet, Marvel Mystery oil. There is no lubrication between the rings and the cylinders and you will score the cylinders and wear the rings with a lot of cranking. The oil will help decrease the scuffing before the motor self lubes the cylinders with splash oiling.
Sounds similar to a problem I had a while back.
One of the injectors froze open. The block filled with gas overnight. Had I known, I would have pulled the fuel pump's fuse. I drained almost 5 gallons of gas/oil mixture out. I pulled the plugs and let it air out for 3 days. Then, I squirted some oil into each spark plug hole, put in 5 qts. of cheap oil and a new filter, disconnected the distributor, and cranked it for about 30 seconds and let it sit awhile. I did that 4 or 5 times over 2 days and changed oil and filter again. Repeated. Changed oil again. I changed the oil out 4 times to make damn sure there was no more gas in the block--just pure oil.
The only good that came out of that fiasco is a really clean block and a lot of knowlege. Time will tell, I guess, if the bearings, etc. were harmed. So far, so good. No smoke or leaks.
Thxs for the info. Yes I am letting it sit and dry now outside. I did not have as much gas as you but had some thats for sure.
I plan on doing just what you said. Changing the oil, spraying some oil in cylinders and cranking it just like you did. Will change oil also more than once. Yes, it is a learning experience. Good thing is I dont rely on the vette for daily driving so I can let it sit and do it slowly and correctly.
Thxs for your info it is appreciated for sure. Glad to hear everything worked out ok for you.
I will let you know how I make out as I go along.
Kevin
Well. its almost over. I got the fuel pump and injectors working, and everything else looks pretty good. New oil and filter and after I get it running I will change the oil one more time. One problem was the starter. I have to put a new one in. I am picking one up and will put it in tomorrow. Going to take the day off work so I can install it. Looks like the nose of the starter broke off when the cylinders got gas in them. So when I cranked it, the nose broke off. Good news for me. I would rather replace the starter than have any other problems thats for sure. I am installing new plugs tonight so I can just do the starter tomorrow. So hopefully by lunchtime tomorrow I will be driving her again.
I appreciate all the comments and help from everyone.
I also want to thank Jon the injector guy. He had emailed me with some info and helped me out. I will tell you guys if you need injector work he is the guy. I went ahead and got new ones and if they dont work out I will send my old ones to him to rebuild. He did help me out with how to put them back etc.
Ya thanks Mark.
Its a learning experience for sure. But I guess thats how it goes when you by the older cars. No matter what happens with the car it does not make me regret buying it. I still love owning it now just as I did when i first got it.
I also enjoy working on it and figuring things out. I remember doing that when I was growning up with my camaro. And me and my buddys working on each others cars growing up. Its a dying breed. Kids dont do this no more. And its to bad.
If it were'nt for us old guys alot of these older cars would be gone for good. I am glad we can keep them alive.
Only thing was at 49 I thought I was done learning and now was my time to do some teaching. Just goes to show, you never to old to learn something.
Hope you doing well Mark. I saw you had a health issue there. Good luck with your recovery.
