I bought a pair of 68448 headers and installed them on my 1987 Convertible. Went on pretty easy, but when I was installing the spark plugs I'm unable to start 3 and 4. The plug hits the tubes from cylinders 1 and 2. I'm running AFR 210cc heads with L-98 angled plugs, and Autolite 103 plugs. I compared the 103s to the stock plugs for length and they're the same length.
Anyone else have this problem?
I'm not really wanting to heat and bend the pipes out of the way because I don't want to ruin the coating on the headers. Anyone know of a spark plug similar to a 103 heat range thats shorter? Any other ideas?
For right now, I may loosen the headers just to get the plugs in, but don't want to do that every time I change plugs.
Hi Fast, i have the 68448 headers and i was surprised at how easy was to change plugs now ! I have AFR195's, L98 angle as well, i have the 65cc version which goes lower than the 75cc and that might affect something but im not sure.
If you want i can take a set of detailed picture tomorrow.
Im using 61-429 AC Delco plugs recommended by AFR.
Thanks for the reply.
I loosened the headers and installed the plugs. When I put the boots on, the #3 boot touches the tube from cyl. 1. I'm thinking I'll have to heat and bend the tubes away to give me the clearance.
Pretty easy,i like them very much ! there are 2 that were hard to install because of the tube bending but the rest make it work ! i think they are worth the $$$
Very strange, can you post some pics of the boot and some general pictures ?
If you want i can take detailed pics of my setup
I'll get some pics up as soon as I get a chance. I'm running MSD wires and boots, and they are a little big, but even with my old block hugger headers they never hit.
I would like to see what your boots look like without the heat sleeve. Especially on the #3 cylinder.
Grainy picture, but you can see how close the boot is to the tube. At least with the camera pic I can see it isn't touching. I still have the problem of not being able to install or remove the plugs without loosening the headers.
Looks like from your pic to mine, the header flanges sit higher on my 210s. That would explain why I'm having problems with the plugs. The water temp sensor looks lower, and the hole above the flange is partially hidden on mine where yours is in full view.
I might have to pull out the stock heads and take some measurements. At least now I know its not me.
That's it , your head is a different design, i didnt know this but i use 7.200 pushrods with 65cc AFR195 heads, a friend has the 75cc version and he uses 7.350s !!!
So i think the 64448's are best suit for 195 and 180's and yours being a 210 set
is a total different thing ! I can see the wire loom hole covered by the headers on yours !
This is all we need to see , its crystal clear, can you still return those headers ???
I guess it wouldn't be a hobby if it wasn't expensize and didn't drive you crazy.
I'll just keep the headers since I already welded my O2 bung into the bolt on collector. Not a huge deal. Next time I need to remove the plugs I'll get the torch out and heat and bend a little.
I might call Hedman and let them know about the difference between the 180, 195, and 210cc AFR heads. Who knows maybe they'll want my car for a prototype header and let me keep them.
