I drove my 93 automatic with a 700R4 last night. I noticed that on the Interstate that when it tried to downshift from Overdrive to drive to accelerate I felt the car shudder almost like a lugging in the transmission. I know the 700R4 has issues at 45MPH trying to decide what gear to be in, but I have never had anything like this.
Taking off from a stop everything is fine it shifts very smooth and it has no issues going into reverse. The car has about 44k on the clock and has never been abused. The fluid is still red and does not smell burnt.
Anybody have any ideas where I should start to look???
You can probably get by with just changing the torque converter. I would drop the pan and see if there is any metal in the pan, just to be on the safe side though.
I found the problem with the transmission.... a stopped up filter and a valve had stuck from not driving the car.
I put in a can of Sea Foam transmission additive and drove the car about 100 miles then flushed the tramsission and changed the filter. Now it shifts like it was new.
What threw me off in trying to figure out the problem was first the milage on the car, only 45K. Second, that the fluid looked good and did not have a burnt smell to it. And third, the car only shuddered when dropping out of overdrive.
Well like everything else with a Corvette live and learn AND drive the car to avoid problems... Thanks to all for the help.
