My 89 is making a clunking noise when I apply the brakes. It's
coming from the calipers. New pads were installed 3000 miles ago
but it just started making the noise. It does stay in the garage for
months at a time. I thought it was rust on the rotors, but I've driven
it a few miles and rotors look clean. On a slow roll with someone driving, I can see the caliper moving when brakes are applied, then clunk. The bolts are tight.
Can you narrow it down to a specific caliper? I've never looked, but I don't think there should be visible movement in a caliper. If a rotor is warped, you would feel it in the pedal. If it is a single caliper, possibly the mounting bolts are loose.
It seems like both front calipers make the noise.
One part of the caliper is mounted and bolts are tight.
Everything is stock except the steel braided lines.
The pedal feels normal.
Since mine does the same thing I have watched for similar posts. Not many offers to help on this issue for some reason. There is an anti rattle clip that may be the problem. Look at this post:
Do the pads themselves move relative to the caliper? That could make a clunk. Another thought, not sure if your brakes are similar to my '92, but my calipers slide inward on two pins when the brakes are applied, and to account for pad wear, but the amount of movement when braking is tiny. Maybe your calipers are hanging up on the pins, due to brake dust, dirt, rust, &c. It's not a big deal to remove the calipers and tidy them up.
