Was having a problem in the transmission linkage adjustment i.e. when accelerating and leaving my foot off the gas pedal the car wanted to hold the speed and even pick up a couple mph until I tapped the brake pedal and it would release like the cruise was on. Disconnected the vaccum on the cruise, (no change), released the mechanical chain, (no change) and even plugged off both vaccum lines and still no change. It was then determined by one of those ase certified ex Chevy techs at the local parts store that the cable to the transmission passing gear was out of adjustment. He took a little slack out of the cable by pushing in on the side where it mounts and loosening the cable in the sleeve. Didn't pay that much attention to the adjustment other than he took out some slack. In the 20 mile drive back home the transmission suddenly wouldn't shift passed 2nd gear. (slow 10 mile drive and then the wrecker) Was afraid I would(or might have already) damaged the tranny. Not anywhere good at this type of problem. Even disconnected the negative battery cable just in case the computer entered into the equation. Still won't go passed 2nd gear.
The tv cable controls the pressure in the transmission. The transmission can be damaged if improperly adjusted. I would think it would take longer then a 20 mile drive to cause damage? I think the proper way to adjust the cable is push the half moon button and the adjuster will return to the rear then open throttle to wide open position and adjuster will pull out to proper position. You might research how to properly adjust the cable.
What year is your car? The following adjustment is for 1985 through 1993.
TV CABLE ADJUSTMENT:
1. On the side of the throttle body you will find the TV cable. There is an adjustment locking tab that you press in.
2. While pressing the locking tab move the slider towards the back of the motor.
3. Release the locking tab and operate the throttle to full WOT and the slider will automatically adjust itself.
4. Drive the car.
Thanks for the replies. The vette is an '89. I will try to adjust the slider. You said the slider, after being pushed back behind the stop, will adjust itself? Thought I did this but after I tried to drive it, it won't go passed 2nd gear. Also, is it in any way connected with the computer? I did disconnect the negative cable and hooked back up. I guess this cable affects more than just the passing gear. What does "tv" stand for?

Once the cable is pushed back you have to 'manually' open the throttle fully.
Do it under the hood by hand, with the engine off. You should hear the adjuster 'click' as you are doing it. Once it reaches full throttle position, you are done and the trans should shift normally unless, of course, you have some other issue with the trans.
The computer does not control the transmission. The only thing the computer does is send a signal to lock up the torque converter.
Resetting the computer will do nothing for the transmission.
