My plan about a year down the road is to turn an '85 C4 into a street legal track car. I've had and '85 and a '91. I believe it's one of the the best bang for the buck out there (don't want to mess up my current 99 C5 - used to go on outings with wife). But to enjoy the driving experience on the track and to drive it decent, the car needs steering feel. And as we know, one shortcoming of the C4's and C5's is that the steering feels numb - you don't feel the road on your fingertips from the tires on up to the steering wheel. So what do you have to do to get that steering feel? Info much appreciated, especially from track guys out there.
C4s have flaws but steering feel aint one of them .
Your C4 might have worn out suspension .
caster ??
My power steering pump is tired and steering effort is a little more than I would like .
There is a special steering rack bushing you can get from various places to replace the factory rubber one. I don't rember if it's poly or aluminum, most likely poly. It's fairly cheap. I've been thinking of doing it with my front end rebuild. Good Luck Tim
I agree with Rob31. I have an 86 I use as a track car and the steering feels fine to me. I also own a 99 C5 and don't think the steering is much different, though the the C5 is better balanced. If your car isn't a Z51, buy a Z51 rack, it has quicker steering. Make sure there isn't any wear or play in the front suspension.
guys ... i'm not trying to start anything but do you mean to say that you can feel like changes in road surface & irregularities and what the tires are doing on the steering wheel? I had a Fiero once and I CAN feel the road on that car, same with a friend's Porsche 911 that I drove. but not on my C4s or C5 ... no feedback.
ps: the plan is to track it @ Autoclub Speedway in Fontana, CA and also @ Willow Springs

Reason: added ps
The Fiero's didn't have power steering which might be what you're used to but, in my 91 C4 I can definitely feel the road surface maybe it's because of the 17"x9.5" wide wheels at all four corners.
