Default ZF6 Skip Shift

Hi all,
I have read various ways to disable the skip-shift "feature" on the C4's. My question is, since this tranny is going into my kit car and my wiring harness does not have the pigtail for it and my ECM has been reprogrammed to remove it, can I take it off the transmission and plug the hole?

The skip shift on the trans is only a solenoid that activates a plunger in the trans. On my '92, I just unplugged the connector to disable it, leaving the solenoid in place. It has been fine like this for many years. Later C4's will set a code and light the service light if you do this, and you have to plug a resistor into the wiring harness so the ecm thinks the solenoid is still connected. If you're using the trans without the C4 harness, you can just leave the solenoid attached.

My view is, if I had wanted help selecting gears, I would have bought an automatic.

Thanks Steve,
The reason I am asking to remove it from the trans is that my tunnel is very narrow and right now that solenoid is interfering with it. I would rather remove it than modify my tunnel.

It was put in to increase EPA MPGs and therefore avoid the gas guzzler tax. I can't imagine anyone wanting to live with the system.

I'm not sure how the solenoid does its job inside of the trans, so I can't say whether or not you can safely leave it out and plug the hole. Call or email Bill at ZF Doc and ask him. He will definitely know the correct answer.

Live well,

SJW

I'm pretty sure the solenoid just limits the shifter linkage.

Shouldn't be a problem removing it, especially if its properly plugged.

This is just a theory, don't take my words as the end all be all.

I just spoke to Bill at ZF Docs. Great guy and very cool. Use the solenoid can be physically removed. He even told me the size of the screw cap to plug the hole. M20x1.5

YES

You can get an oil drain plug the correct size from Napa to plug the hole. I have done this to two different ZF6. Works great.

Here is a pic of my latest ZF with the plug in place.
