okay, i have a 93 lt1, will the harmonic balancer only go on one way? because the way it was marked the bolt holes dont line up, i also stripped one of them and thinking of just putting 2 bolts in. should it be fine with only 2?
The holes will only line up one way, if they aren't lining up rotate the balancer 120 degrees and try again. All 3 bolts need to be in or it will be severely out of balance (=bad)
I'd definitely chase the bad threads and re-install ALL THREE BOLTS. Tri-angling is the key and GM uses it for many of it's brackets/mountings, braces, etc.
You could also go up a very small amount in bolt size - maybe to a metric after a re-tap - in order to still be able to run THREE BOLTS. If there's any difference in the weight of the bolts it'll be negligible.
Either way, I strongly recommend installing THREE BOLTS.
If it is the original balancer. That would be a good time to go ahead and replace it as it is a wear item.
If its in great shape & the hole is completely fubared, drill out & install a Heli-coil insert & install same size bolt. One Heli-coil shouldn't cause a issue.Or you could drill everyone & Heli-coil all 3 so the rotating weight will all be the same at each bolt hole.Alot cheaper than a new balancer
