Default "Infl Rest" Code

I am intent on fixing the "Infl Rest - Seatbelt" lights which don't go off after I start my 1990 convertible. I am 100% POSITIVE that I have the sensor contacts on the LH sensor well cleaned and greased with dilectric grease. When I reset the code (16), the lights both go out and then come back on after about ten seconds. I have conflicting instructions - one says that code 16 is the LH side (Driver Side.) The other says that 16 is the code for the RH side. Which is correct? If 16 is the LH side, then I must have a bad sensor. Good advice is greatly appreciated. Tks...

My FSM says-

" code 16- Front Sensor#1 (LH) Sensor fault"
Code's 14, 15 and 16 deal with the LH sensor, codes 24, 25 and 26 deal with the RH
code 14- Shorted to ground (LH)
Code 15- Open (LH)

code 24- Shored to ground- (RH)
code 25- Open (RH)
code 26- Sensor fault (RH)

Clearing codes- Ground ALDL terminal K
Turn IGN ON
Wait for fault coeds to begin flashing (approx 5 secs). When codes begin flashing, unground ALDL terminal K for 3 secs +/- 1/2 sec.
After ungrounding ALDL terminal K as described, ground it again for 3 secs, +/- 1/2 sec
Unground ALDL terminal K, wait 10 secs, turn IGN OFF

Several others have commented that you may have to do this 2, 3, 4 or more times to get the timing right on clearing the codes-

I cheated- bought a $20 switch tool from Midamerica designed to do this- just had to follow directions, and the light is still off- +2 years.

Good luck.

BTW- you mention sensor contacts- are you talking about the wire conectors that connect to the sensor- I always thought the major problem with the sensors was rust and corrosion on the frame preventing the sensor from making the ground- and the frame had to be cleaned and de-corroded in order to get it to work.

Somebody who didn't cheat may want to chime in.

Keep trying it- my 3 secs and your 3 secs and Midamerica's 3 sec (maybe China's 3 secs) may all be different. I'd do it a whole bunch, then call Midamerica, and if no joy, I'd start replacing sensors- but that's just me.....

I would hope it could be replaced by an average C4 owner like me- I might ohm out the new sensor to make sure if I accidentally jarred it or otherwise forced whatever contacts inside to "make" that they unmade before i hooked the Batt back up. Or tried ohming out the old one to see if it was momentary "on" or not. Or maybe read the FSM- It says to handle them carefully- I'm sure the parts guys at the stealers handle them carefully.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

The seatbelt light is the secondary light for the airbag system. My seatbelt light would not go off no matter what I did. It turns out I had a bad DERM. Once I replaced it, it went off. Do a search, there are tons of threads on this.

Correct a code 16 is the left hand side sensor. Before doing any work on the system DISCONNECT THE BATTERY and wait about 15 min. The sensors are on the frame rails close to the firewall. The drivers side can be seen by removing the battery. The sensor is about an inch square. Remove it and take a dremel tool with a grinding stone and clean the area where the sensor sits. Also clean the bottom of the sensor real good. Apply a coat of Dielectric Grease to the bottom of the sensor. When you put the sensor back on put a small star washer on the bolt to help make a better ground. Then go ahead and use the Mid America tool/button to clear the code and turn off the INFL REST/SEATBELT light. The tool is kinda touchy so you might have to try it a couple of times to knock it out. If none of this works you might have a bad sensor and you will need to unplug it and take an ohm meter to it to make sure. The plug for it is in the drivers footwell area down behind your pedals it's yellow in color and has 3 pins in the connector and it just pulls apart. The sheets that come with the mid america tool tell the ohm specs for it. GOOD LUCK Pipe

CORRECT for the ohm specs. Make sure you ohm the pigtail comming in from the sensor not the lead going to the DERM module. I don't think the GM stealership sells the sensors anymore. Pipe

I found with my 1990 Vert when my RH sensor went; I did the sanding and the greasing and followed the FSM instructions for time..3 sec on and off..it still stayed on...I then tried the clearing instructions AFTER the 3 code 12 blinks and cleared it. To me the instructions are vague and it led me to believe that you start the clearing at the start of the blinking (code 12). It worked for me immediately after I got into the default code blinking.
Hope this helps...!!!!

RH is easier than LH. I removed the rear section of the plastic wheel house for access.
