Default TDC dissy removed on wrong stroke?

OK,Dumb question time.
I have this nagging sensation I have removed the distributor,on the wrong stroke.
The TDC timing mark is lined up on the balancer, but the rotor button is pointing about 1/8 or so, past number one(lead) as I had marked on the plenum prior to removal of the dissy cap?

Sounds more like you're off a tooth when you reinstalled the distributor. Did you rotate the motor at all when you had the dizzy out?

I am going to make the assumption that you marked the plenum, completely removed the distributor, and if you rotated the engine, you put the balancer back to the same mark (TDC). If those are correct and you are off slightly, that means you are one gear tooth off on the distributor. Remove it, rotate it, and reinstall until it lines up with your original mark.

with 69-90 vette. Have you started the engine? With it being only a tooth off, it might start if you rotate the distributor.

I have not replaced the dissy yet as i've just commemced a cam (zz4)swap,new cloyes timing chain etc

Yes,marked plenum at where rotor was facing prior to dissy removal, had timing mark lined at tdc,yet the rotor was facing just past number one
lead.
Felt when turning over to line up tdc on balancer, compression coming up,but compression dropped off slightly(gone over tdc?) before the timing marks lined up...hope this makes sense.

I'm just a little confused now. You didn't put the distributor in yet? You are talking about the rotor and lead before removal? The rotor button would not be lined up with the #1 lead at TDC because the engine fires at 6 degrees BTDC. So that would be normal. I believe the compression should build up to TDC and not let off until after. If you are now, is it possible that you got the cam gear off a tooth when you installed the chain?
