Default Oil Filter Adapter Assembly

To anyone that has taken the oil filter adapter assembly off the engine....which round gasket is supposed to be used? I have two different round ones that came with the FelPro oil pan gasket set, see picture below and I did not pay attention to the one that I took off.

L98 or LT1?

Doesn't look like either one will fit an LT1

I guess putting the engine/year would have helped.....sorry...got in a hurry.

This is for a 95 LT1.

Good....those are the ones I used. Had a leak from the adapter assembly...hopefully I just did not have the two screws tight enough....will see.

Thanks

LannyL81, et al--

Sorry to reply to the aging thread, but it seemed like it was still "open" for discussion. I'm working on another project/thread ("'Removed harmonic balancer, now "crank hub" stays put'") but saw you had this discussion already started on the oil filter adapter.

I have a '93 LT1 and need to drop my oil filter adapter in order to fully drop the pan (Service Manual was right this time). I removed only 2 bolts and the oil filter/adapter won't drop down.

There is nothing in the SManual (that I've found) on how many bolts need to be removed in order to get it to "drop". In my picture below I've circled (in red) the bolts that I removed. Does the one circled in blue ("squared in blue") have to be removed in order to drop the oil filter adapter? I didn't want to start wrenching on this as it is the adapter/screw for the filter.

If not to remove the "center" bolt, WHY isn't it dropping down?

Thanks in advance,

Jesse/WhoBuB

Only 2 bolts as shown in ZBRA pic above.
Old seals is probably locking it in; try some gentle taps with a knocking device

I'll try some "whacks" with a "candy hammer" to be on the safe side--hopefully that'll free it up.

If I have to whack too hard, the "Charleston2012" link references a great article on an upgrade/change to a different adapter. Unfortunately it gave no clue as to how to free up/uninstall the old. It was a great coverage of the process to upgrade though. . .

Thanks for input folks. Any other info is appreciated. I'll report back if the "whacks" worked.

Whacks aren't working here . . . any other suggestions??? I'm afraid if I hit it too hard it'll do damage.

If you have both of the bolts out, you should be able to use a rubber mallet and it will come off. The only thing that could be preventing it is the gasket is glued in with some rtv crap, and or the rubber O Ring has vacuumed itself and it just needs some persuasion.
You could put the filter back on, and a bucket underneath and start the car for just a second, and BAM the pressure will ensure the thing comes off.

Part of the problem is I don't have any access without the CatConverter dropped (logged a new thread on that just a few minutes ago).

The other thing I guess I didn't make clear was starting the engine is out!!! The entire optispark, waterpump, etc is removed as well as the oil pan is partially dropped (but can't drop all the way WITHOUT the oil filter adapter & CatConverter off).

Me stumed!!!

Okay, I would screw a filter on it and wiggle it around till it comes off. There is nothing other than those two bolts holding it on, and age.

Bingo 'Charleston2012' !! I put the oil filter back onto the adapter and that nearly alone gave the leverage to get it out of its "sticky" situation.

With a little wiggling and manuvering I was able to get it around the CatConverter and now the oil pan dropped far enough to get the timing cover off.

Now if I could only get the oil pan past the FRONT part of the engine. It seems to get hung up on one of the crank/rod that is on its down stroke.

Turn the crank. Known issue with LT1's and oil pan.
