Default 1994 Analog Gauges

Hello All,

My 1994 has one nagging issue with the analog gauges, all function with the exception of the oil temp gauge, is there someplace that this novice can start to run down the possible causes, outside of the backside of the cluster, to check for bad ground, bad connection..prior to having to pull the whole panel, ie..where should I start to look?
Thank You All in advance for any advice. Best, Derek.

I would definitely either test, check out or replace the oil pressure sending unit. There is a high probability you're going to find that to be the problem. I would not tear into the panel first until I was sure the sending unit was OK.

The sender is on the top rear of the engine just aft of the driver's side fuel rail and against the firewall. It is the lower of two sensors there and has a tan wire to it.

Mt, it is with the oil temp, second gauge down from the top,
top being oil pressure correct?
followed by water temp and volts
top to bottom, all others function, oil temp just sits on far left of dial
in vertical and does not move.
I appreciate your insight and reply...

Small club here I am from Mystic..LOL with the same oil temp sensor problem on a 91. i looked in the FSM and it also mentioned checking a plug by the battery that sends a lot of signals to the instrument panel for water inside it. My tach also reads wrong about 10% too high. In the plug according to the FSM the pins are next to each other in the same plug go figure. I did change the sender and it was not the problem. What i should have done and failed to do was check the resistance of both elements as mine sends one to the ecu and one to the gauge and the ecu reads correctly. For me this will be a winter fix as the cruising time is starting to get near the end soon.

I misread your problem, got sidetracked by the first response from oil temp to oil pressure. The oil temp sender is in the oil filter mount under the left side of the engine. To diagnose, remove the connector and jump the dark green/white wire to ground. If the gauge moves all the way to "hot" the sensor is bad. If not, there is a short in that wire, or the gauge is bad. BTW, welcome to the forum.

Edit: You can also cycle thru the digital readouts to see if the oil temp gauge shows anything. Do this by pressing the "gauges" button on the trip computer and you will see various readouts including oil temp. Each time you press the button, you get a different gauge.

Apologies to Derek as I did miss-read it and sorry throwing SAILORSTEVE in the wrong direction. Guess sometimes you just hear something different in your head.

However my approach is still the same, work the gauge first before going into the IP.
Sounds like STEVE has got good info and direction.

Charge on..
