Got my cable, plugged it into my laptop and it managed to install the driver for the usb serial convertor on com14. I selected com 14 on winaldl.
I plugged the aldl cable (with the 10K jumper in place across AB) into the vehicle and laptop and then turned ignition key 'ON'. Started up winaldl but got message "Unable to open serial port 'com14'.
So the laptop and the ecm are not talking. Any ideas?
Might be a WIN 7 issue
Many have reported connection problems running TP on Win 7 and gone back to XP or even Win 98 to solve
I don't seem to have any problems running Tuner Pro RT on Win 7 for my 87 with the Moates APU1.
I cannot use this setup on my 84 which is why I am trying to use winaldl on my win7 laptop with the new aldl cable with in-built serial - usb convertor and 10K jumper switch from OBD diagnostics.
I might try the new setup on my 87 to see whether I have any joy.
Still haven't succeeded doing a datalog yet. The instructions with the cable suggested running a windows comms program called HyperTerminal:
Trouble shooting: If all the cables are
connected properly but you are still not seeing
data, there are a number of things to check.
When testing any cable, simply plug the USB
cable into your Laptop or PC, and then plug the
12-Pin ALDL connector into your vehicle. Start
up the HyperTerminal program (usually under
Start > Programs > Accessories), select the
COM port the USB cable was installed on
(usually COM3, see above), and select a baud
rate close to the ECM's (for either a 160 or 8192
baud, chose either 2400 or 9600, respectively).
As soon as you turn the car key forward to light
up the dash, but car not running, data patterns
start to stream across the HyperTerminal
screen. At that point you know that proper
communication is happening between your
vehicles ECM and your laptop, and any data
logging program should work.
It did appear to be communicating which was a good sign. The issue I have is I keep getting a "cannot open com port" message from winaldl.
I had a prob with the com port not communicating error msg. I went back to the configuration board and filed up/down com ports till I found one that reported ok in the box to the right. Default is com 1 I found joy on com 3. (USB Vista)

Not sure what you mean by configuration board. Are you talking windows configuration or winadl configuration?
on the main page for WinALDL there are 4 buttons across the top. l-r Config, data log, dash and exit. Click on the Config to bring up the configuration screen. 2nd from the bottom is labled COM Port. to the right of that is a box that reads either OK or ERROR. I paged through the com ports till I got a "OK" display on COM 3. I hope this helps, I am just gettin started with this efi stuff.
