IIRC, the longest pigtail is for the front shocks. So those can be used in the back but the rear actuator can't be used in the front.
As far as rebuilding the actuator, there is a company that rebuilds the actuators and used an aluminum ring to replace the OEM-style plastic ring. Some members have used them instead of paying the high price of OEM actuators.
Real important to note. Earlier FX3 systems had a different gear turning ratio (nbr degrees from stop to stop) than later systems. I don't remember the date ranges, but make sure you get one from the same year or know the what date range you need. The info is burried in here somewhere.

True, there are two different ranges in degrees that the shock rod turns, but the stops that control the amount the rod turns in degrees is on the small rod-mounted gear and rod itself, not the actuators. Actuators are all the same in terms of how they operate (except for the pigtail length between front and rear).
The FX3 shocks types by year are 89 thru 91 and 92 thru 95.
