I should have known better, but I replaced the power steering pump with one from Advance auto parts back last summer. Even though I been less the 100 miles, since then, the car the pump went out Friday afternoon. No noise just loss of ps.When I got home it was locked up. Put some serious wear on the serpintine belt. Advance will replace it, but changing this part is a royal PITA. Getting both hoses to line up, as I slide down the pump, as it is lowered into place is my biggest problem. I don't want to get another bad one, and have it go out on me while I'm driving. I would advice against getting a rebuild from Advance. But if you do. Save the receipt.
Most all of the reman or rebuilt parts from the chain stores are cheaply done and probably done in China or other off-shore cheap-labor, cheap material countries.
You may want to consider getting a pump from Turn One. Lots of good reports about this vendor and they also have race-quality pumps that withstand high RPM's
Might want to also try Rockauto for a good product.
The pumps from Advance are rebuilt GM units from Cordone. I've run one for a bit over a year ( ~ 6k miles) and it has been working great so far. Not too much to go wrong with those things.
Our shop has not had a lot of luck with reman units from A1 Cardone. We don't buy from chain stores; everything comes from reputable wholesalers. Doesn't matter what the Cardone part is, it's just hit or miss. Sometimes we will have to replace parts under our warranty a couple times before a good one is installed. Now, we really don't use that brand even though it may be a few bucks cheaper unless it's the only one available immediately.
One key to long(er) life of PS pumps is to make sure that the PS fluid is flushed and replaced with new fluid when doing a pump replacement. High RPM operation can quickly heat up PS fluid and can cause cavitation in the pump. That can lead to pump failure especially if the parts used in the reman process are not of decent quality or the workmanship is shoddy.
If the hoses are old (as in original), then there is also a possibility of a hose collapsing or starting to fall apart internally. That can cause excessive pressure or restrict the flow of fluid on the return side.
