I am finally pully the transmission to install the T/O bearing, Clutch, PP flywheel & pilot bushing -last night I got it on jack stands and the exhaust off, with no real problems.
I have some questions;
1) I have to get a pilot bushing puller -NAPA has them but I need to be sure that they give me the correct type -what do they look like?
2) What do I use to install the new pilot bushing?
3) I've never pulled a flywheet before, do I need a puller? If so, what type.
This was on a BBF, but a SBC should be the same.
1) I used a slide hammer with a pilot bearing extractor. It's basically two fingers that go inside the pilot bearing, and then you tighten a screw and that pushes the fingers outwards where they'll grab onto some notches in the bearing. You then yank on the slide hammer to pull it out. 5 or 6 whacks should to it.
2) I used a socket and very light hammer strokes. Again, I had a bearing, so I used assembly lube on the outside to help it move in easier.
3) Should be a a number of bolts holding it on. Once those are out, it'll fall right off... be prepared to catch it or have someone help you.

Stuck the bushing in the freezer stuck a touch of mobil 1 around the outside of it once removed, went in super easy. No it wont come out as easy either.

Thanks,

1) To get mine out I have a Tap that fits in nice and bottoms on the crank. Turning it slowly it draws the old bushing out very easily.
2)To install the new one I use a large socket and hammer. I do what cruisinartvette said and freeze it, then out a dab of oil on the outside.
3)No puller needed, just loosen the bolts around the flywheel/pressure plate assembly. If you have an alignment tool I would stick it in the clutch before loosening everything, otherwise watch our for the clutch disc to fall when you loosen the pressure plate.

Thanks guys. the exhaust is out, the "C" beam is out& the drive shaft is out -can't work on it tonight, but the tranny comes out Thusday night!
To get my bushing out, I use a long socket that just fits inside the bushing (5/16, 9/12, or 3/8 or metric, I can"t remember). Fill it full of axle grease, put an extension on the other end and hit it with with a mallet. The bushing will pop out by itself.

Showing your age
Old skool mechanic trick, no need for fancy extractors
Can use anything that is a snug fit in bushing

I'm going to try that first. I have the transmission out, so the clutch etc. will all come out tonight.... i'm just working on it a couple hours each night.
See my other post -my 84 has a transmission with a December 87 stamp on the case. No T.V. cable, has the vent tube on top.
