Default starter problem

What would cause the front end (the end that is half open with the shaft and gear) to shear off? My mechanic said it is because I am getting water into the heads due to a blown head gasket and causing more pressure. Even if there is more pressure caused by the water, I dont see how that would impact the starter housing. Does anyone have any ideas?

If a cylinder filled with coolant and the piston was flying up on the compression stroke, the motor would come to an abrupt stop. That could cause real havoc on that connecting rod and the starter.

they are nose heavy and if the front support brace is not there they will break as well. Providing you don't have a head gasket issue. I have had 3 starters break like that and the nose support corrected the problem.
