As the LT4 valve springs will not fit inside the OEM oil splash shields in my 89,I'm going to run without the shields,as I'm fitting the fel-pro seals that brings me to the question of what is the advantage of installing or disadvantage of not installing the small rubber "0" ring on the valve stem?
As many have found, are already broken or partially missing when doing top end rebuilds anyway.?
The "O" rings seal the gap between the retainer and the valve stem to prevent oil from running straight down the stem.
I don't know about leaving the splash sheilds off - I guess if it doesn't affect the spring height it wouldn't be an issue....you might want to research that some more or let some else chime in that knows for sure.
After rebuilding my engine, and running some rebuilt heads, my motor smoked like a chimney and I went through a quart of oil every couple of hundred miles. I found out my heads had new seals, but they left out the o-rings. I installed new ones and have not burned a drop since.

Did not know it would be that bad,I will be installing them for sure.
