Default Tach Filter - Curious about 3 plugs

So I am in the process of fixing some electrical issues, the tach filter being one of them. On my 84 (and C3s) I notice that the tach filter has three electrical connection ends, but to my knowledge, one of the connectors has not been used, yet the tachometer still works. Anyone know why these original tach filters have three ends?

Recall reading somewhere a terminal on that style filter was a tacho test point ?

TPI engines only have 2 wires on a metal can ( capacitor ) type filter.

Yes makes sense, I notice that aftermarket replacements there are only two connections. I can tell that the extra connection probably has not been used in 26 years as it was dusty. Can't wait to get my new part in, then I can see my tach again.
