Default Part Identification Help

Anyone know what to call this and/or where to find it?

I found this broken piece when changing my heater core. There is a small motor on the heater core cover that moves the flapper door back and forth. This is the retainer clip that fits into the motor arm and holds the rod that links to the flapper door.

It should look something like this if the tab wasn't broken off.

I found this part on Corvette Central but it doesn't look correct.
Heater control rod to valve - retainer

For reference, I have an 89 Coupe with electronic climate control.

It looks like it will do the job, just a newer, probably stronger design.

Don't you love it when the shipping on an item costs more than the item itself?

Part turned out to be incorrect and does not work. Anyone have any ideas?

I attempted to glue the piece together, but that wasn't successful. I may try a zip tie and see if I have any luck there. Would really prefer just to replace the part though.

Chances are that retainer is not Corvette-specific. Maybe if you could find a sympathetic GM parts guy he could help you.

Another (remote) possibility- the "HELP" rack of bits and pieces in some auto parts stores.

You may have to be creative with something that doesn't look like the original but will adapt.

If you come up completely empty, you could hold the retainer in the closed position and drill thru the two parts where they meet, then use a small piece of wire like a cotter pin to hold them together, even add a drop of gorilla glue or urethane glue for insurance.

if you're into U Pull It type yards, and there's no Corvette donors (good luck there), I've found that big front engined GM cars, ala Cadillacs, of a similiar year, have HVAC systems and are a good surce of possible donor parts; i.e a solid state ten speed fan control module, $300 list, $20 at U Pull it (and I still think it should have been cheaper, but hey, its about the only thing I ever fixed on my Corvette for 20 bucks).

The part turned out to be incorrect. Couldn't even really mod it to work. I did however mod the original part and it sorta works. I guess I'll have to start calling some corvette yards and see if I can find a replacement. Though it will likely be as brittle as my original.

You've been looking for this part for almost a year with no luck. If you have exhausted the possibilities I listed last year, I suggest you get creative and fabricate something that will work.

I know that this isn't much help but...
Looks like the part you bought from Corvette Central was perhaps for the manual A/C, as it is identical to the part that I broke when changing the heater core in my '85 with manual A/C. I searched high and low for this part for the better part of a year, and ended up buying a complete heater box on fleabay because it had the rod with the little white clip that I needed. Now I see that Corvette Central has the part, so next time I break it, I'll be able to get one from them...

I ordered another part from Dino's salvage. It came the other day and it's different than my piece but no the one I ordered from Corvette Central (which didn't work).

It looks to be basically the same part without the locking tab on it. Doesn't seem like it'll work well but I'll give it a shot.

Your response is to the snapshot in the post above you?

The part in the snapshot is a GM # 1224062 which shouldn't be what you received looking at the invoice you posted or I guess maybe that's what you received from Dino's which should work then. Here's an image of the "service part" in Cliff's snapshot using the ACD # 15-7994. The part is NLA but there is stock on many dealers shelves throughout the country. A GM dealer could tell you if there were any close.

Yes, sorry for the lack of clarity. The part pictured in the snapshot is what I received from Dino's. The part I previously orderd from Corvette Central was different and didn't work. The part from Corvette Central would hold the rod but has a cup shape on it designed for the end of the rod rest against.

From the picture it looks like that part from Covette Central would work with the blend door pictured. On mine the blend door rod is longer and extends a couple of inches beyond the clip so I'd have to drill a hole in the "cup" side of the clip to allow the rod to pass through.

If the one from Dino's is just wore out then the part # I mentioned is what you need. It's NLA but like I mentioned a GM dealer could tell you if there's one close or not. There is also a couple different fasteners that GM does that are used in later model door latches etc that would work but you'll need to find a parts "man" not a parts "boy" to put his hands on them. They're different depending upon the diameter of the threaded rod and also the hole it's being inserted into.

A last resort could be a salvage yard. The one you need is used on most all GM full-size pickups(with a vent window) from '85 - '91, S10 trucks the same vintage and all GM cars '76 - '88 RWD bodies.

Two years! WOW - I don't recall ever seeing the post!
