I noticed my car car was making a funny whinning noise when i would make turns so i checked the power steering fluid and it was almost empty and it was a milky grayish color what is this from? I swear i filled it like two weeks ago. Should i suck the rest of the fluid out of the reserve and refill it? Any tip? Thanks Ron
A whitsh or grayish color is probably caused by moisture contamination. When the fuid is low, the pump is sucking air. The moisture in the air mixes with the oil and together with all of the air bubbles makes the oil appear grayish. If the oil appears very whitish or milky, you are somehow introducing a lot of water in to the system. Let the system sit for a while to see if the color of the fluid returns to normal. IF it does, you can just add fluid to top it off. However, to make sure that there is no contaminants, I would drain and refill the system with new fluid as a precaution. :)
What year is your car? May not make a difference, but I have done a engine running flush using GM Cold Weather Power Steering Fluid. I popped off the reservoir return line and put it in a oil change tub. Then filled the reservoir with new stuff (plugging the return hole) and had someone start the car and I poured like made new stuff for a few seconds...it really moves some fluid.
