Hey guys, I am looking for someone in my area that can help me with some tuning and troubleshooting. I usually do everything myself, but my business has gotten so off the charts crazy this year I just don't have the time to sit down and figure it out. Luckily I got it in decent driving condition last winter, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten a chance to get it on the road this year. It still has some bugs and annoyances that I just haven't had time to track down.
I would like to spend an evening or a weekend day with someone who knows how to scan and tune my 85. I prefer someone that will take the time to show me how to do it and how to interpret the readings. I don't want to just drop it off and pick it up a day or two later, I want to be as interactive in the process as possible. I don't mind paying whoever in beer (excellent local micro brews around here!) or cash if they want... I just want to do, learn, and have it done right with some help!
I'm in Asheville (Western NC) and would like to find a local, but can easily drive an hour or two if needed (like upstate SC, Charlotte, Knoxville, even ATL).
For a 1 on 1, sit down, "hold your hand" where knowledge is passed on through a tune/tutorial with the addition of the related software/hardware requirements you'd be lucky to be under $1K for the whole experience.

Whew nevermind- thats alot of beer ! So then, any good articles/tutorials on how to get started with scanning with a laptop with the cable and some software? I've read stuff in the scan and tune section, which is very interesting and I would love to dig into it, but they have those readouts that I wouldn't begin to know what to look for. And I'm too busy to dig into it right now.
Maybe I'll post over there to see what they have to say!

From my experience the Scan & Tune section is pretty slow over there.
Scan and data logging is pretty easy once your set up.
Ok, that is not hard .. I can do it and I'm an idiot.
I know I can scan the hell outta this thing no prob - that's just pulling 1's and 0's off an interface. It's how to interpret that data that I don't know about. How am I supposed to know what the proper A/F ratio, TPS voltage, blah blah I'm supposed to see at 3500RPM in OD in open loop while the flux capacitor is influxing its hypobarric mercury levels?

The software once you use it is not hard to read. Tuning is another story.

HOW HOW?????
The other day a fellow needed a switch for an elecrical battery booster repair, he ask the clerk for a replacement, the clerk couldnt find the proper switch . I ask him if he looked on the shelf to see if there was a simliar replacement, he explained that he was too lazy to look and didnt know what to look for.. knowing what he needed i explain to him that being lazy wouldnt inferr with learning what he needed and after a awhile he would figure it out..
you know i seen this gentleman again, i ask him if he repaired the problem,, he said "had no time " and pawn it off to another....wow i said i guess you learned something!!:rofl :

Wow lots of info there on tuning! I am ordering the cable today and hopefully over the holidays I can find a day to hook it up and do a scan. At this point I don't need to do the tuning and custom promming, I just want to see how healthy everything is. I am thinking some sensor(s) may need replacing due to a wierd high idle (12-1400 RPM) on random occasions. I also suspect it is running rich, but how rich is unknown.
I want to scan it instead of just replacing sensors and parts until it works out. Thanks for the input!
