Default New Mod installed - No gain

I installed the Accel TPI intake on my car last week.

So now I have a stock TB, ported plenum, stock runners and the Accel base.

Yesterday at Etown I tested the new mod. No gain at all.

My 4 full passes gave me ET's of 12.96 - 13.03 with a mph of 103.5.
2 other passes I was on the brakes , so they don't count.

All comments welcome.

Vic

Vic,

What were the weather conditions on race day? I remember we were racing in -440 conditions and better back last fall. Perhaps conditions weren't as good yesterday, yet you STILL rand in the 12s? Just looking for something here. :)

Try it elsewhere before saying no gain!(those clocks still might be a little screwy) :D

Still quite impressive for a bolt-on L98.

I didn't think you would see a gain unless you replaced the runners as well. They are still a big bottle neck in the system.

At least you didn't lose anything, and now have a base to build on...(Hey, that's a funny!)... :D

i have to agree with Rich...i think the stock runners are smaller than the accell base. I look fo rthe flow specs i have on the TBI components to try to confirm.

That corresponds with my butt dyno...

I have the same top end setup except I have a 52mm throttle body and I removed the internal casting "bumps" from the stock runners - definitely not worth the time (modding the stock runners - that is). I couldn't feel a difference but some have said here that the (approx.) 15hp you are supposed to gain won't be felt...

It is plain to see that the ACCEL base is a superior component to the OEM base, problem is that the OEM runners choke the ACCEL base. Can't wait for my SR box to arrive so I can fit it, not sure if I will get much (if any) of a gain with my current setup but I will find out soon anyway...

I agree with Rich, you will need to install the larger runners and port the plenum to match. Then you will have a couple hundred more RPM to go up as well

Your vette is still the fastest bolt-on vette Vic! But seriously, on my 85, I ported the FREAK out of the stock intake, and I actually LOST time! I went from a 14.0 to a 14.3! So it's hard to say what's going on.

Basically that is what I am saying.

The weather conditions were similiar to all my previous days that I ran 12.9x ET's. My 60' times were the same as other days also.

Now, if it was 80 degs and I ran 12.9x, I would conclude that the Accel base helped.

My gut feeling tells me that adding a set of runners will not help. 65Z01 also has data that proves this.

I know the Accel base is a very good base. But on my stock cam, stock heads, stock exhaust manifold Vette, it didn't help.

I enjoy testing items one at a time. I spend all of last year installing the mods in my signature.

Vic

Vic and idea what power #s your car is making now? The D-Port heads in your car should be good for up to 350hp without being touched.

Scorp

My car has never seen a dyno. But no way I have 350 hp.
I think the heads can support more power, but the Cam might be maxed out.

Another thought I have is that maybe I need to up my shift points.

Thanks for the report Vic. I guess it's not really worth modding the intake tract too much unless you are doing heads/cam.

TIMSPEED, When you opened up the base that much you lost the velocity.
Unless you changed heads, ect., bigger doesn't mean better.

the rest of the intake is acting as a restriction, especially the stock runners and throttle body. you just gotta remember that when you change stuff, the effects are cumulative... even though the accel base might only make a 15hp difference now, after you change some of the other intake components it will provide a bigger gain compared to the stock base. lots of components by themselves don't do all that much, but when combined with other mods they have good results!

Playing with the shift points may help. I'm obviously playing with less power than you are, but my shift points are 4600 for 1st to 2nd and then 4400 for each shift after that.

How about some 1.6 rockers and new springs? Perhaps you're losing a little power up top from old springs. You haven't done those yet have you? Are you willing to pop the valve covers yet?

Did your torque & hp peaks move up after the new base?

Do you have the dyno graph's ? That would really help me.

Scorp
The valve covers have never been off yet. Maybe they need to come off. ;)
