Ok, I got all the wires disconnected, wheel/bag removed, and the 2 bolts securing the column through the firewall removed. However there is the gas pedal bracket that is preventing it from coming out. There are two small nuts on it and I removed those but there is also a kind of one way locking nut that is holding it in. How do I proceed in this step, I tried yanking the column out but it still too much. Pulled on the gas pedal but no luck there either.

I have a vague memory of a similar frustration when I pulled my steering column 4-5 years ago but can't remember the details. Maybe check for a nut or bolt on the engine bay side of the firewall.
Ok removed the intermediate shaft bolt and the column moves more freely but still catches on the gas pedal bracket. I'm getting real frustrated at the bull**** engineering on this car that makes it so hard to service just about anything. I'm also surprised no one else has any info, I did a search and came up with only one other thread and no solution to that either.
The nut retaining the gas pedal looks kinda like the nut that holds on C5 rotors. Can't you remove it with a pair of pliers? (grab a prong and spin it off)
Ok I did it!! I just pried around the silver ring (the one with the pin in the middle) and then just took some wire cutters and just snapped the ring off. Steering column is now able to be removed. Now I might have just been able to push the pin back in with a punch but I really don't care at this point :P
